Clueful Got Better

Remember when we excitedly told you all about the world’s first iOS app that guarantees no more of your personal information is mined by other iPhone apps? Refresh your memory here: Bitdefender: Pioneers of Maximum

We remember thinking it was another genius creation by the security masterminds at Bitdefender and that it just couldn’t get any better. Well, we will happily tell you that we were wrong; it got better. A lot better.

The Bitdefender brains have gone out of their way to remind iOS application users that it is surprising how much an app can learn about a person and what they do  – without them ever knowing, so it is imperative to really understand these apps and the manner in which they treat your privacy and use your private data. Clueful is the way to gain that understanding as the product identifies intrusive applications and shows you what they do behind your back.

What’s new?
1. A lot more apps are now covered: over 100,000 apps have been analysed covering almost all free apps that are available for download.

2. New insights: Bitdefender know a lot more about apps now. These new clues are very powerful indicators of bad behaviour:
  • Apps that upload stuff from your address book to a remote server: e-mails, contact names or phone numbers*
  • Apps that log you in without encrypting your password, leaving it for all to intercept*
  • Apps that upload your phone's UDID*
  • Apps that upload your location to their servers*
  • Apps that touch (read or write) your calendar
(* this information has been obtained by the app being tested in the Bitdefender lab - they were caught red handed! Bitdefender runs dynamic analysis 24/7)

3. Search got better: if, for example, you search for "Facebook" you'll get the Facebook app first. The following results will be apps relevant to your search. This is a huge usability improvement, since the app is now search-based.
